Your Eyes and Ears at the Nation's Capital

For, without God a nation is no longer safe!

We are all grateful for the protective Hand of God which was very present at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. last week, when a heavily armed gunman was seized after shooting the operations manager at the front door. The FBI also warned that there was another ministry’s headquarters on his hit list. These evil incidences which have happened with regularity across America are another reminder of the desperate need for spiritual transformation in our society. Outlawing guns will never stop those who have an evil intent. There is an ongoing prayer wall at the Family Research Council and many other ministries at the Nation’s Capital. Millions also pray for America’s protection.

But, time seems to be running out!  Has America’s hedge of protection been removed? During one of my interviews with Senator Mitch McConnell, several years ago, the senator made this comment  about America’s readiness against an  incoming enemy attack:  “The only shield of protection America has is a prayer shield.” This inspired me to launch “Operation Prayer Shield”, asking people to pray at least five-minutes each day for the nation’s protection. We recommend praying Psalm 91 out loud, placing America in the first person context. More on Operation Prayer Shield…..

How many warnings has God already given America in this 21st Century?  In 2001, the September 11th attack at the World Trade Center in New York City and the U.S. Pentagon was America’s first wake-up call. In 2006, Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans; 2008, the collapse of the U.S. economy, the crash of Wall Street, the Great Recession; 2009, a first ever terrorist attack inside a U.S. military base in Ft. Hood, TX; 2010, tornadoes and flooding increased; 2011-2012, drought, fires, floods increased, affecting the nation’s food supply; and civilian mass shootings increased.

America desperately needs to be restored to the God of its Founding Fathers. The 9/11 warning only turned people back to God for a few short months.

Is America facing a Nineveh moment?  In his newest book Implosion, author Joel Rosenberg asks, “Is America facing a ‘Jonah’ moment, or a ‘Nahum’ moment?” The ancient city of Nineveh had two warnings from Yahweh. The first time, they repented and were spared from extinction. The second time, they did not respond with repentance and they were destroyed.

Twenty five years ago the LORD spoke a word to me that He desired to spare the nation like He did Nineveh. I was in the middle of taping television programs on Capitol Hill, when the Holy Spirit answered my grieving spirit for the nation, “I want to send America a Nineveh-type revival.”

The message Jonah was to deliver was simple: “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” (Jonah 3:4) The King of Assyria responded with repentance for the entire kingdom. “So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.” (Jonah 3:5-7) Mercy is received in verse 10, “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.”

Nineveh was spared from God’s wrath for over 150 years, until once again their wickedness reached Heaven’s throne. The LORD’s second warning came from a different Hebrew prophet, named Nahum. Yet this time the people of Nineveh did not turn from their wicked ways and start fasting and repenting. Instead, the judgment of God came upon the people, and in 612 B.C. the city of Nineveh was utterly destroyed. (Nahum chapters 2 and 3)

We need to ask: Has America crossed the line of God’s mercy?  In America, during this present hour, millions are fasting and praying into 2 Chronicles 7:14, asking the LORD to restore the nation. What is the motive behind our crying out to God? Is it based on just getting the right leaders in the 2012 election, and then returning to “business as usual”? We cannot assume that a great number of people praying, means we will touch the Throne of God’s grace and receive a pass on judgment.

It appears that we are the generation which prefers to have their ears tickled. Who is listening to the prophets speaking the same warnings God sent to Nineveh? We hear the news about our crops drying up, and cattle being sold off because there isn’t any way to feed them all. Do we consider we are the next victims in the food chain?

America has seen two great revivals in its history. During the First Great Awakening and the Second Great Awakening millions repented of their sins, accepted salvation in Jesus Christ, began to read the Bible and obey the word of the Lord.

What is this church generation asking the Lord to do? Let’s examine the motives of our heart, to see if they are pleasing to the heart of Jesus. We need to be “crying out” for the LORD to cleanse the Church of Jesus Christ. “For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17)

Are spiritual leaders willing to repent for the failures of the secular-driven, materialistic Church?  Or, are we like the lukewarm Laodiceans who were deceived by their own pride? Unless America has a genuine turning back to God, a Christ-Awakening; we may very well suffer the fate of the Ninevites during the time of Nahum. It is more than coincidental that the Arab terrorists who attacked America on 9/11 were descendants of the Assyrians, who originated from the ancient city of Nineveh in northern Iraq, not too far from their border with Iran. And now the Ayatollahs are saber-rattling, calling for the destruction of the United States as well as Israel.

Pray for the “fire” of the Holy Spirit to cleanse the Church of Jesus Christ. Society will only be transformed when the Church becomes “salt” and “light”. We are in the last season of “world evangelism”. Are we praying for the end time harvesting of the nations? Let’s preserve America for the work of Kingdom of God! (Psalm 2:8)
