House must be ‘People’s House’ again
The House of Representatives welcomed a new leader, as Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., officially became the 62nd speaker of the House. Many challenges lie ahead as he tries to unite a broken House, divided GOP and work with the White House. He is promising a new way of doing business that is fair to the people, and calls for Republicans to do a better job of being an opposition party and holding the government accountable and more transparent. Ryan would like to get rid of waste and abuse. He wants the House to be the ‘People’s House’ again since it is the closest branch to the American people and it is half of the government closest to the people.
At 45, the Wisconsin congressman is the youngest person to fill the position in 150 years. He’s now tasked with the job of unifying the Republican Party. “The House is broken,” Ryan said in his first remarks to the chamber. “We are not settling scores. We are wiping the slate clean. We are going to move forward; we are going to unify. Our party lost its vision, and we are going to replace it with a vision.”
Ryan is expected to be a Speaker representing all Americans. When he entered the House chamber for the first time as Speaker he was shaking hands and hugging members of the House Freedom Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus. He is respected and loved by many because he is a man of conviction and willing to work with others who disagree with him.
Speaker Ryan speaks about a new vision to unify the House of Representatives. But he will only be able to deliver with our support. Pray for Speaker Paul Ryan and your representatives. Also, include the U.S. Senate leaders and your senators. (Pray Isaiah 11:2-3.)
RESTORING THE GOVERNMENT
Voting is a Christian Civic Duty: We have covenant-breakers running the government, and if Christians would vote for God-fearing leaders like Josiah into places of authority we would see reform and revival (Read about King Josiah in 2 Chronicles chapter 34). Paul Ryan has the same principles as King Josiah. We need to support him and all the Members of the House with prayer. After Ryan was sworn in and given the speaker’s gavel, he led House members in a prayer to unite the parties.
Complacency among Christians: Out of 90 million evangelicals in this country, only half are registered to vote, and only half of those actually vote. Approximately 67 million evangelicals do not even vote in this country! A large percentage of the 23 million that do vote, do not vote biblical values.
